– ECIP is currently focusing its research on representatives of the subclass Digenea, a large and diverse group /ca. 2 500 nominal genera, ca. 18 000 nominal species/ found in all vertebrate classes. Our team applies integrative taxonomic approaches in order to define species boundaries and improve identification of digenean species in different focal host groups using a combination of molecular, morphological and ecological methods.
Our main efforts are presently focussed on improving species delineation and identification based on molecular and morphological characterisation of species within the genus Diplostomum, a group of important freshwater fish pathogens. We are also investigating the taxonomic and molecular diversity of digeneans in coastal, pelagic and deep-sea Mediterranean fishes, Antarctic coastal fishes and African and Asian freshwater fishes.
